Car & van sales in Ireland are recovering well after a few disastrous years, and a lot of purchasers are opting for a brand new car from garages & motor traders but what happens when you drive away from the forecourt, the vehicle immediately depreciates in value.

This could have consequences if you make a Motor Insurance claim in the following months and years, if a total loss occurs on the vehicle due to fire, theft or accident the Motor insurer will pay for the market value of the vehicle at the time of the incident and certainly not the purchase price of the vehicle.

There is a solution in the form of a relatively new product on the Irish insurance market called GAP insurance or General Asset Protection Insurance.

For example you paid €30,000 for your car and a year later you have a total loss claim, your comprehensive insurance policy may only pay out €20,000 which could be the current market value at the time of the incident, that means you will have lost €10,000 on the original purchase price.

With Gap Insurance, in the event of a total loss claim, you will be covered for the difference between your Motor Insurer’s pay out and the Value or Net Invoice price that you paid for your vehicle. The duration of the contract is usually 36 months but can be extended to 48 months if a finance agreement in place and cover & peace of mind can be bought at a reasonable price.

Cover is available for Motor cars & light commercial vans up to 3.5 tonnes, up to a purchase price of €120,000, that are less than 8 years old and with less than 120,000km on the clock.

For more information and a quote on GAP insurance contact us on 1890 549 549 or e-mail info@futureinsurance.ie

Today’s business world is constantly changing, it’s unpredictable, volatile, and is becoming more complex every day. By its very nature, it is fraught with risk. In recent years, increased regulatory requirements have forced businesses to expend significant resources to address risk. A thorough risk assessment has become increasingly important to the success and longevity of any business. Your Insurance broker can help with this issue by using their skills in assessing risk for insurance purposes, while also providing the most competitive insurance product to suit your particular risk profile.
It’s that time of the year and as the Irish Summer is the usual roller-coaster, sunny one minute and pouring rain the next! It’s that time to book a Summer holiday and an essential part of the package is a good travel insurance product. It’s important to get the right product to suit your particular travel needs, for example whether that is a single or multi-trip policy or to include action or winter-sports. It’s as important to know what’s not covered as much as what is covered by any particular policy. And finally, ensuring that you are fully covered for any medical expenses and that any pre-existing medical conditions are covered.

A typical policy will cover the following eventualities;

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation (up to €6 million)

Personal Effects and Baggage (up to €2,000)

Cancellation or curtailment (up to €4,000)

Personal money (up to €750)

If you are planning to participate in a sport or leisure activity cover may not be available, please check with us if you are going to take part in any action or hazardous sports. Also an additional premium will apply for Winter Sports.

Remember that you must declare any pre-existing medical conditions when taking out travel insurance. If you are unsure about this just ask one of our travel insurance experts!

Don’t delay, phone Future today on 1890 549549 to speak to one of our insurance experts.

If you feel confident enough and would rather just get a quote, check out our fabulous online offers with our partner Blue Insurance. Just click here for great online offers and instant cover!

It’s that time of the year again and lots of you will take the opportunity for a holiday abroad. Many of you will also need to hire a car while on your holiday and it’s a good idea to consider some extra insurance to cover your costs should you have an accident while driving. Excess insurance for hire cars is a notoriously tricky area. The hire car companies will offer optional products like “Collision Damage Waiver” and “Theft Protection” which sound great, however almost all come with a “Non Waivable Excess” which can be anything from €500 to €3,500 depending on the hire car company policy and the type of car you hire. The more expensive the car, the higher the excess.

Collision Damage Waiver is an optional service offered by car hire companies which if accepted, reduces your financial liability for damage to your vehicle including parts and accessories, provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of your rental agreement i.e. you don’t use it for an unintended purpose such as delivering goods if you hired for pleasure use. Be careful because some policies I looked at excluded theft or attempted theft or vandalism and you needed a separate “Theft Protection” policy for that!

This is all very confusing so I did a little bit more research and looked at the fine print for hiring a car from Hertz as part of a Ryanair booking. When you hire the car online the price includes both CDW and Theft Protection, with a warning that an excess applies to both, however there is no information about just how much the excess is. I dug a little deeper. I eventually got to the FAQ which explained the services and the amount of the excess. For my Opel Corsa booking the non-waivable excess is €1,050.03. That’s not too bad I suppose, if I hired a BMW 7 Series, the excess would be €2,800! The website also gave another piece of valuable, if not scary information. If you decline the CDW protection and are unfortunate enough to have an accident you will be responsible for what is called a “deductible”, which for the Corsa is €15,000. Incidentally for the BMW 7 Series it’s €90,000!

It’s a good idea to take a few minutes to read carefully through your rental agreement and ask questions. It’s also important to check your car fully for scratches or any damage when you pick it up and take some photos before you drive off, just in case!

The moral of this story is that you should definitely accept the CDW and Theft Protection policies but it’s also well worth considering car-hire excess insurance. For a small fee you can protect your car booking and enjoy total peace of mind while on holiday.
